Summary

In this #1 New York Times–bestselling suspense masterpiece, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike team up with new heroes Scott James and his K-9 partner, Maggie。

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike keep their promises。 Even if it could get them killed。
Elvis Cole is hired to find a woman who's disappeared, a seemingly ordinary case, until Elvis learns the missing woman is an explosives expert and worked for a defense department contractor。 Meanwhile, LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his patrol dog, Maggie, track a fugitive to a house filled with explosives—and a dead body。 As the two cases intertwine, they all find themselves up against shadowy arms dealers and corrupt officials, and the very woman they promised to save may be the cause of their own deaths。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Perhaps my favorite Elvis Cole book。 Nice twists, snappy dialogue but what raised it into the top tier for me were: 1) Interesting to get the K9 dog's view, and 2) the portrayal of a mother who lost her only son to terrorists and the relationship she forms with an ex-military "operator。" Perhaps my favorite Elvis Cole book。 Nice twists, snappy dialogue but what raised it into the top tier for me were: 1) Interesting to get the K9 dog's view, and 2) the portrayal of a mother who lost her only son to terrorists and the relationship she forms with an ex-military "operator。" 。。。more

I decided to read this book because I am a Fan of Maggie the German Shepard。

Too violent for me

A good story with multiple chi including Maggie, Scott’s K-9 partner。 Had a tendency to be confusing with the chapters highlighting each character told in first person (even Maggie!)。 But all in all, a good tale。

It was an okay read。 Hooked me in at first but dragged on for the rest of it。 Was kind of confusing at times , kept jumping back and forth between different characters POVs。 There were so many characters too which was a bit confusing。 I liked the characters which made me want to keep reading though。

As usual, things are not quite right with his new client as she is really a federal agent。 This good story involves explosives, a brilliant dog and a grieving mother。

Yes Elvis Cole is loyal to a fault but does Miss Lawrence really deserve this level of loyalty as it causes the plot line to bog down?

This is my favorite Elvis Cole story of the five I've read so far。 The center of the plot is a bit outlandish (i。e。 this would never happen) but all the surrounding intrigue and action is superb。The fairly large role of K-9 Officer Scott James and his dog, Maggie, really enhances the story。The conclusion is especially satisfying and fun! Without giving anything away: A woman hires Elvis to find her work colleague and friend。 The search leads Elvis, Joe Pike and Jon Stone (their scary Black Ops p This is my favorite Elvis Cole story of the five I've read so far。 The center of the plot is a bit outlandish (i。e。 this would never happen) but all the surrounding intrigue and action is superb。The fairly large role of K-9 Officer Scott James and his dog, Maggie, really enhances the story。The conclusion is especially satisfying and fun! (Fear for Maggie's life!!) I think if I knew someone just starting to read the Elvis Cole books, I might recommend this as the first one。 You don't need any previous ones to enjoy this。 。。。more

Anyone who knows me knows that I love to read。 Just finished "The Promise" by Robert Crais。 This book, to me, deserves three thumbs up!! The main characters, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, are so interesting and they take on the most unusual cases。 Really couldn't put this down and was so sad that I finished so quickly。 Now on to another Robert Crais novel。 Anyone who knows me knows that I love to read。 Just finished "The Promise" by Robert Crais。 This book, to me, deserves three thumbs up!! A woman comes to Cole, asking him to find a friend who has gone missing。 Everybody lies, and nothing is as it seems, but Elvis Cole keeps his promises。 An excellent, quick, exciting read, especially if you like hard-boiled private eye stories。

A fun read but probably my least favorite Robert Crais book to date。

I read this one because of the GSD character。 Not bad。

The Promise, a Joe Pike and Elvis Cole novel。 January 4,2021This is my second Crais novel。 The first one, Suspect, I found to be much the same, but this seems to move much faster。 One of my concerns is the number of points of view。 A good writer can usually pull this off, as did Crais。 However, it can be confusing, at least to me。 It didn’t slow it down, but there were areas, that I had to go back and find material that is relevant to what I’m currently reading。 The three main characters, Jon St The Promise, a Joe Pike and Elvis Cole novel。 January 4,2021This is my second Crais novel。 The first one, Suspect, I found to be much the same, but this seems to move much faster。 One of my concerns is the number of points of view。 A good writer can usually pull this off, as did Crais。 However, it can be confusing, at least to me。 It didn’t slow it down, but there were areas, that I had to go back and find material that is relevant to what I’m currently reading。 The three main characters, Jon Stone, Elvis Cole, Joe Pike, as well as Scott James and his dog Maggie, from a previous novel ‘Suspect’。 Maggie is an ex-military Shepard, bomb sniffer dog。 It was cool, that he brought Scott James into this, along with his dog Maggie。 He wove the dog’s abilities into the story, nicely and worked out fine, but again, in my opinion, too many points of view, I found to be somewhat difficult, at times。 Now does that mean I didn’t like the book, no…not in the least? The book moved right along, and I received my fair share of enjoyment。 It kept me engaged, and willing to move to the next chapter; however, it did not build the excitement, I’ve had, reading other books; were I was totally engaged, so much so, I wanted to cheat and find out what happens to the hero, or femme fatal, by skipping to future chapters。 Would I recommend this book, to someone else; I make it a policy not to recommend books, much like T。V。 shows and movies。 Not everyone has my taste in books or movies。 That being said, I did give it four stars, because of its entertainment value。 Is that a recommendation; it can be construed as such。This is a beach read。 As one reviewer so aptly put it; don’t start this unless you are willing to put some time into the reading。 It is best read in one or two sittings。 I read it over a period of two weeks。 It gets confusing if you leave it for two or three days。 It becomes somewhat laborious to move forward from there, without reviewing past chapters。 Have fun and enjoy the ride。 。。。more

One of a detailed series featuring Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, by Crais。 The author wrote for TV for many years (including Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues)。 These books are dialogue heavy, and each short chapter heading focuses on one primary character。 Scott James is an LA police officer, and Maggie is his highly drained K-9 dog。 When there were chapters focused on Maggie, the dog, I thought I would throw the book aside。 But it is to the credit of Crais, that the dog chapters are still compelling One of a detailed series featuring Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, by Crais。 The author wrote for TV for many years (including Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues)。 These books are dialogue heavy, and each short chapter heading focuses on one primary character。 Scott James is an LA police officer, and Maggie is his highly drained K-9 dog。 When there were chapters focused on Maggie, the dog, I thought I would throw the book aside。 But it is to the credit of Crais, that the dog chapters are still compelling。 We learn that Maggie was a bomb-sniffing dog for the Marines in Afghanistan, before coming home, ad being trained by the police。 There is an interesting adversary, Mr。 Rollins, and the story is kept moving。 。。。more

Elvis is hired to find Amy Breslyn, presumed missing and possibly stealing from her employer。 But his client isn't who she says and so many moving parts to the investigation have only made it more difficult。Just a bit of a let down。 The story is told primarily from Cole's perspective, which is enjoyable, as always。 But the story itself is so full of surprises and twists that it leads to a very subdued conclusion。 I've come to expect plenty of pace from Crais, but this was much more in the catego Elvis is hired to find Amy Breslyn, presumed missing and possibly stealing from her employer。 But his client isn't who she says and so many moving parts to the investigation have only made it more difficult。Just a bit of a let down。 The story is told primarily from Cole's perspective, which is enjoyable, as always。 But the story itself is so full of surprises and twists that it leads to a very subdued conclusion。 I've come to expect plenty of pace from Crais, but this was much more in the category of police procedural than he typically falls。The writing itself is exactly what Crais has previously offered, but the story wasn't his best。 He tried to bring in just about all of his characters and it wasn't necessary and didn't improve it。 This is Elvis Cole and Joe Pike (and recently Jon Stone), as much as I like Scott James and Maggie, I don't need them in the story。A lack of excitement and not the best plot bring this down。 2 stars。 。。。more

Notes to Self:- Started with Suspect #1 Scott James & Maggie Series- Then read The Watchman #1 Joe Pike Series- Mixed up the three series Elvis Cole, Joe Pike, and Scott & Maggie。 - The Promise follows the Suspect and later in Joe Pike series。 Whew! Glad I cleared that up for myself。 I like Joe, Scott & Maggie。Notes on The Promise: - Great narration by Luke Daniels and MacLeod Andrews- Clunky setup to get all three (Elvis, Joe & Scott + Maggie) into one storyline but it worked out in the end。 - Notes to Self:- Started with Suspect #1 Scott James & Maggie Series- Then read The Watchman #1 Joe Pike Series- Mixed up the three series Elvis Cole, Joe Pike, and Scott & Maggie。 - The Promise follows the Suspect and later in Joe Pike series。 Whew! Now that I've started to read books by Crais, I'm going in reverse chronological order! This one was never-a-dull-moment, with lots of twists and turns, and LOTS of characters, although many (most?) had very small parts to play。 The plot was fairly complex, dealing with high-grade explosives and those persons buying and selling them, for various reasons, often personal。 I was pleased that the female characters in this book were mostly sympathetic, unlike in other books I've read by this author。 Now that I've started to read books by Crais, I'm going in reverse chronological order! Another great Elvis Cole and Joe Pike thriller。The action is non-stop。 Elvis and Joe dig deep into another action filled adventure that is filled with spies, gangbangers, corrupt Homeland security operatives and everyday innocent folks。

Very suspenseful, with a tightly woven plot and lots of detail that makes you think Crais knows his subject matter, but never so much that it bogs down the action。 Like his fellow crime fiction writer Michael Connelly, Robert Crais has a good understanding of the dynamics between police departments, federal enforcement, and private detectives, including the one-upsmanship, jealousies and rivalries, and suspicions amongst them。 Also like Connelly, James Ellroy, and a few others, he's great at set Very suspenseful, with a tightly woven plot and lots of detail that makes you think Crais knows his subject matter, but never so much that it bogs down the action。 Like his fellow crime fiction writer Michael Connelly, Robert Crais has a good understanding of the dynamics between police departments, federal enforcement, and private detectives, including the one-upsmanship, jealousies and rivalries, and suspicions amongst them。 Also like Connelly, James Ellroy, and a few others, he's great at setting the scene in depicting Los Angeles。 I've followed the Elvis Cole-Joe Pike series from the beginning, and only a few of the books held my attention better than this one。 。。。more

A worthy addition to the series。 Thoroughly enjoyed this tense page-turner。 The usual no-nonsense action interspersed with the trademark warmth and humour we’ve come to expect from Robert Crais。 Recommended - and you can dive right in even if you haven’t read any of the novels which precede it。

Elvis Cole is hired to find a woman who is being sought by her employer for embezzlement。 When Elvis follows up on potential contact information on the woman, he runs into dangerous men and their even more dangerous weapons。 Nothing Elvis has been told about the case is correct。 Elvis pulls Joe Pike and others into the case to help。
